"Generative Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: The Pursuit of Effective, Efficient, and Ethical Use"

Talk Description:

This presentation will explore the role of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, focusing on its effective, efficient, and ethical implementation. The session will discuss the potential of AI-driven tools to enhance teaching, learning, and academic research while addressing challenges related to academic integrity, bias, and responsible AI use. Practical examples and research findings will be shared to provide insights into best practices for integrating generative AI in educational settings.

Biography:

Dr. Olgun Sadık is a faculty member in the Intelligent Systems Engineering Department at Indiana University, where he teaches courses on engineering design, programming, and professionalism and ethics in the engineering design process. Dr. Sadık holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science education and earned his Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University. His research focuses on emerging learning technologies and computer science education, including the integration of artificial intelligence in education.

Before his current position, Dr. Sadık worked at İnönü University and Middle East Technical University in Turkey, where he taught various courses such as foundations of instructional technologies, instructional design, and programming. In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Sadık is conducting workshops and seminars to promote the effective, efficient, and ethical use of generative artificial intelligence in K-16 education.

Title:
"Developing Pedagogical Policies for Ethical Use of GenAI in Education”

 

Talk Description:

There has been a growing interest in the prevention of academic misconduct and the promotion of academic integrity after the advent of GenAI tools. Relevantly, this keynote session will present the results of the EU Erasmus+ “Facing Academic Integrity Threats (FAITH) Project” which dealt with establishing minimum standards for academic integrity in higher education institutions, preventing misconduct, and supporting those affected by academic dishonesty. The session will specifically make a reference to the ‘guidelines on developing effective academic integrity policies’ and ‘pedagogical materials’ as outputs of the project and provide recommendations for various stakeholders for the ethical implementation of GenAI tools in education.

Short Bio:

Dr. Salim Razı is a full professor at the English Language Teaching Programme of Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University (COMU), Türkiye. He is the Founder Director of COMU Centre for Academic Integrity. He served as a founder Board member of the European Network for Academic Integrity from 2017 to 2023 and is the co-founder of Asia-Middle East-Africa (AMEA) Integrity. He coordinated the EU Erasmus+ KA2 project “Facing Academic Integrity Threats (FAITH)”. He was awarded the Turnitin Global Innovation Award in 2015 and received the ENAI Outstanding Member Award in 2023. He is an associate editor of the International Journal for Educational Integrity published by BMC part of Springer Nature.
